History and Analysis of Design | G132
To create a cover for a book or magazine with some kind of nationalistic style or socially relevant theme or message. I chose the book “the Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck, as it’s within the time frame stated as well and both a nationalistic and socially relevant theme from the Great Depression era America and today. The style that caught my eye was Suprematism, so I wanted to try and take an American bent to this style. Granted I didn’t want to use the inconsistent typesetting, so I kept the type to a minimum, using Gill Sans and Futura. I used the photo of Florence Owens Thompson, taken by Dorothea Lange, Migrant Mother, as my main image. The novel and the photo are two of the most iconic works to come out of the Great Depression.
My grandmother was born in 1932, from her I’ve learned a great deal about life for a family of 11, nine children, who all survived, and of times during the Great Depression, of how her mother and father got by and managed to raise her and all of my great aunts and uncles. All of whom I’ve had the chance to meet before some of their passing. My grandmother is one of the driving forces in my life, she helped raised me. I know about her early life and how different it is today. I think others should learn about that point in American history.
